Remote and in-person interpreting

Make your event accesible to all your audiences

I offer in-person interpreting, and I can organise everything for you, including the equipment. I interpret remotely several times a week — I can help you set up Zoom so everything goes smoothly. I do not recommend Microsoft Teams, but I can show you how to work around its main limitations.

There are two types of interpreting?

Yes, with different results, costs and technical requirements.

Simultaneous interpreting

In simultaneous interpreting we talk into a microphone from a sound-proofed cabin, and the public listens through special earphones.

A fast meeting

Simultaneous interpreting is twice as fast as consecutive interpreting. Ideas flow back and forth as if people were speaking in their own language. Warning: arguments may heat up quickly too.

A multilingual meeting

If you’re going to use more than two languages, simultaneous interpreting is for you.

A meeting in a big venue

The interpreting booth and the sound mixer take up a bit of space (from 3×3m).

Higher budget

Simultaneous interpreting is more expensive, because to do it properly you need special equipment, two interpreters and one sound technician.

Consecutive interpreting

In consecutive interpreting we take notes for a few minutes,
interpret, and repeat.

A calm meeting

Consecutive interpreting takes twice as long, but that gives people time to think and cool down when debating delicate topics.

A bilingual meeting

If you’re going to use only two languages, consecutive interpreting may work for you.

A meeting in a small venue

Consecutive interpreting is the most intimate, and all it needs is the two people we’re interpreting, the interpreter, pen and paper. Even the table and chairs are optional.

Lower budget

Consecutive interpreting tends to be cheaper, even if the per hour cost is higher, because you need no special equipment and often just one interpreter.

How shall we arrange your interpreting EVENT?

Learn about the process

  • First contact. Let’s talk for about 10 minutes. We can do this over the phone or Zoom. Or, if you prefer, you can send a detailed email, with the date, topic, people who will be there, languages you need, etc. This consultation, which I offer free of charge, is a great opportunity to understand your needs and does not commit you to anything.
  • Quote and OK. I will send you a detailed quote separating people and equipment costs. After you confirm, I will book the date and time for you.
  • Documentation. When speakers stand sending their presentations and materials, please send them over. They will be invaluable in preparing the event.
  • Sound check. Depending on the complexity of the event, we will need about 15-30 minutes to turn the equipment on and check the sound before the event starts — this is also valid for remote interpreting.
  • The event. During the event, we will communicate via instant messaging to solve any issues that may arise.
  • Celebrate and calibrate! We can have a short talk after to check how everything went. This is a crucial part of the process, ensuring that we all learn from each event and continuously improve the services.

FAQs

Professional interpreting requires specific equipment that is adapted to the needs of each event. Usually, there are soundproof booths with professional audio equipment, receivers and headphones for attendees and a microphone system for speakers.

The equipment required varies according to the format of the event, number of participants and languages required. Contact me for a customised quote tailored to your specific needs.

As with face-to-face interpreting, the equipment needed varies depending on the format of the event, the number of participants and the languages required.

However, it is usual to use specialised remote interpreting platforms, professional headsets with integrated microphone and, of course, a stable and redundant internet connection.
